SUBJECT

Discipline, Crime, and Violence Report

RATIONALE

Attached is a copy of the 2015-2016 Discipline Summary. This data has been submitted to the state as part of our annual Discipline, Crime and Violence Report. This report is used in part as data determining persistently dangerous schools as required by Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Some categories related to persistently dangerous schools include assault and battery with a weapon, schedule 1 & 2 drug violations with the intent to distribute, sexual assault, and weapons violations.

Administrators reported 1220 discipline referrals for 2015-2016; 637 at AHS, 361 at CMS, and 221 at the elementary schools. Not all discipline referrals are reported to the state because they have a discipline sanction that is considered a minor offense.

The total number of referrals is a decrease of 60 from the previous year.

As was previously reported, School Resource Officers reported 311 referrals. For clarification purposes, some categories of the SRO report do not match the divisionís summary report. This is a reflection of different terminology used by law enforcement and the Department of Education.

Finally, according to the Virginia Department of Educationís analysis of our divisionís data shows no discrepancy in the rate of suspensions for students with disabilities.
