JOB DESCRIPTION

 

TITLE: Therapeutic Counselor

 

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

 

Direct client service position responsible for providing support, monitoring and intervention to therapeutic program clients, developing, implementing and reviewing service plans, case recording, and collaborating with school staff and other community resources and services.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

·         Hold a bachelor’s degree in a relevant Human Services field with a minimum of three years of successful experience;

 

·         Hold, be eligible to hold, or willing to obtain certification as a QMHP-C (Qualified Mental Health Professional – children) or BCaBA (Board Certified assistant Behavior Analyst);

 

·         Such alternative to the above qualifications as the School Board may deem appropriate and acceptable; and

 

·         Demonstrated professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with school personnel and members of the community.

 

REPORTS TO:

           

Director of Special Education

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1.    Provides ongoing behavioral interventions to clients based on assessed needs and goals of clients. This is done as the means of implementing appropriate services and developing effective alliances with clients, as well as maximizing client’s functioning and school/community integration.

 

2.    Assists, supports, monitors and intervenes with clients in the therapeutic program. Implements behavioral management programs as outlined in the service plan in an ethical and competent manner.

 

3.    Documents all client contacts on a timely basis including face-to-face, collateral and community contacts and maintains case records in compliance with the school division, payor and regulatory standards.

 

4.    Participates in regular interdisciplinary staff meetings including IEP meetings and accepts newly assigned cases from assigned caseload and based on IEP services.

 

5.    Meets regularly with the division behavior specialist as a means of enhancing professional growth, reviewing and processing the provision of behavioral specialist and case management services, and dealing with appropriate case related issues.

 

6.    Develops Individual Service Plans based on assessed needs, in consultation with the division behavior specialist and IEP team, within the team model of service delivery. Participates in IEP goal and service development and provides services according to the IEP.

 

7.    Reviews with the client and/or staff on a regular, but no less than quarterly, basis the progress made in reaching services goals so that the service plan can be modified as necessary to ensure that the goals and objectives are being achieved. Provides quarterly progress reports and mid-nine weeks progress reports for IEP services and goals related to therapeutic counseling to the IEP case manager for inclusion in the IEP progress reporting.

 

8.    Confer with family members in order to keep them informed of treatment planning and progress.

 

9.    Maintains and submits non-billable service logs on a weekly basis, and maintains and submits billable documentation as required for Medicaid billing purposes.

 

10.  Maintains appropriate Safety Care Certification, implements Safety Care methods and complies with division incident reporting procedures.

 

11. Develop and implement treatment plans. Guide in the development of skills and strategies for dealing with mental health needs.

 

12.  Maintain confidentiality of records.

 

13.  Continue professional growth in recent developments in the field through professional literature, coursework, and seminars, and establishing and maintaining contact with other mental health providers. Maintains required mental health professional licensure.

 

14.  Perform others duties as assigned by the supervisor. 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

 

Ten Month Contract (200 days), exempt FLSA Status and salary to be established annually by the School Board.

 

EVALUATION:

 

Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Director of Special Education

Mental Demands:

 

·         Reading; ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written);

·         Ability to maintain accurate and audible records.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, and reach above their head. Use of hands for placing and pulling objects. The employee may be required to lift and carry up to 30 pounds. The employee may be required to implement Safety Care restraint methods as trained. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
