how animals adapt to their environment. What are 'animal
characteristics'?
Characteristics are things
that make animals different from each other, such as their body covering, body shape, how many legs they have, and how they move.
Types of Animal Adaptations:
Physical:
Characteristics an animal is born with. Camouflage and mimicry are two physical adaptations some animals have that help them to survive in their environment.
Behavioral: Actions animals take to respond
to life needs, such as food, shelter, and protection. When the opposum 'plays dead', or deer and rabbits 'freeze',they are trying to protect themselves from threats in their environment. Hibernation, migration, and instincts are also behavioral adaptations.
Environments:
The kind of adaptation an animal needs depends partly on its environment. We have studied two kinds of environments:
Dry-land, which includes desert,
grassland, rainforest, and forest
Water, which includes ocean, river, stream, swamp,
marsh, and pond
