THE COMMUNITY

Alleghany County is located on the far western edge of Virginia. It is bordered by the Allegheny Mountains, from which the county derives its name, and it is the northernmost part of the Roanoke Region of Virginia. The county seat is Covington. The county was created in 1822 from parts of Botetourt County, Bath County, and Monroe County (now in West Virginia). As of the 2010 census, the population was 16,250. The county economy is dominated by WestRock, which operates a paperboard mill in Covington, the second largest on the East Coast. Alleghany County is known for the low cost of its housing market and close proximity to The Homestead Resort in Bath County, VA; Lexington, VA; The Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, WV; and Roanoke, VA.  In the fall of 2020 the Alleghany County School Board, Covington City School Board, Alleghany County Board of Supervisors and Covington City Council all passed resolutions to consolidate the two systems in the 2022-2023 school year dependent upon acceptance by the Virginia Department of Education and funding by the Virginia General Assembly.
