The Alleghany Highlands YMCA continues to partner with Alleghany County Public Schools to provide swim lessons.

Alleghany County Public Schools’ third graders are receiving free swimming lessons this school year at the Alleghany Highlands YMCA thanks to a grant provide by the YMCA of the USA.  “This continues to be a great investment in the healthy and safe practices for our youth, learning to swim or to advance their swimming ability,” stated Gene Kotulka, Superintendent of Alleghany County Public Schools. “I appreciate the YMCA’s willingness to collaborate with us in the endeavor and for all that they continue to do for our students to have this opportunity yet again.”  The Alleghany Highlands YMCA provided the grant, the certified swim instructors, the lifeguards, and the facility.  The school division and YMCA have collaborated on other projects and will continue to work together to benefit the children of the Alleghany Highlands.  “Educating children to be safe around water is just as important as teaching them to look both ways before they cross the street,” said Jennifer Unroe, CEO of the Alleghany Highlands YMCA.  “The YMCA teaches children of all ages and backgrounds that water should be fun, not feared, and this practice not only saves lives,it builds confidence.”

The grant currently covers this school year; both Alleghany County Public Schools and the YMCA hope to continue the program for the foreseeable future. If you are interested in providing financial assistance to the program, please contact Sherman Callahan at 540-863-1809 or Jennifer Unroe at 540-862-8677.
