At a called meeting on October 5, 2020, the Alleghany County School Board appointed Sherman B. Callahan to serve as the division acting superintendent, effective October 5, 2020. Mr. Callahan currently serves as the Director of Elementary Instruction.

Mr. Callahan received his Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Virginia Tech in 1995. He later earned his Masters of Education in Administration and Leadership/Policy in 2002, also from Virginia Tech.

Mr. Callahan was a teacher at Boiling Spring, Callaghan, and Falling Spring for 6 years prior to serving as assistant principal at Clifton Middle School for 7 years. Mr. Callahan proceeded to become the principal at Sharon Elementary for 10 years before accepting the position of Director of Elementary Instruction at the Central Office in 2019.

When asked about his appointment as acting superintendent, Mr. Callahan stated, "I am honored to be a part of the Alleghany County School Division and trust the educational leadership we have within our community. I have had the privilege of working the past 25 years with a vast majority of ACPS staff, whose dedication to the students of Alleghany County Public Schools has been unwavering."

School Board Chairman Jacob Wright stated, "We are very excited to have Mr. Callahan as our acting superintendent for Alleghany County Public Schools. Mr. Callahan has had a positive impact on the lives of many students throughout his career as a teacher, a principal, and most recently as our Director of Elementary Instruction.

Mr. Callahan's friendly nature, easy going personality and his "team approach" to decision making is something the school board feels is very important as we make our way through these unprecedented times. We feel very confident in our outstanding team at the school board office and we feel this appointment will only strengthen the educational opportunities for our students in the Alleghany Highlands."

The Superintendent of Schools serves as the chief executive officer of the Alleghany County School Board. Major duties of the superintendent include, but are not limited to, the following:

Acting as the educational leader of the school division
Enforcing school policy and regulations
Overseeing staff personnel management
Overseeing facility management
Directing community relations
Overseeing pupil personnel services
