NEWS RELEASE – January 29, 2021
KINDERGARTEN SCHEDULE FOR THE ALLEGHANY COUNTY SCHOOLS
Alleghany County Public Schools will host Kindergarten Orientation on Tuesday, February 23, 2021. According to Virginia law, a child must have reached his or her fifth birthday by September 30, 2021 in order to enroll in a Kindergarten program in a Virginia public school. Alleghany County Public Schools offers a Junior-Kindergarten program for children who reach their fifth birthday by December 31, 2021. If your child meets the age requirements, it is recommended that you plan to attend this very important event. Callaghan, Mountain View, and Sharon Elementary Schools will each host an orientation for parents of students who reside in their attendance districts.
During the orientation session, parents will receive important information from Kindergarten teachers, the school principal and the school nurse. Presentations will cover topics such as the Kindergarten curriculum, the Junior-Kindergarten program, documents required for enrollment, and good home-to-school communication and rapport. Parents will also have the opportunity to select a date and time for the Kindergarten readiness screening.
The orientations at each school will begin at 5:30 pm and conclude by 7:00 pm. A school-lunch style meal will be served in the school cafeteria, and children will have the opportunity to participate in a ride on a school bus. Please call your school’s office to RSVP to notify them of your intent to attend.
Due to current COVID-19 safety protocols within schools, physical distancing will be practiced, and face masks will be required for all attendees.
For more information, please feel free to call the elementary school within your attendance district or S.B. Callahan, Acting Superintendent/Director of Elementary Instruction at (540) 863-1809 at the Alleghany County School Board Office.
In case of inclement weather on February 23, orientation sessions will be rescheduled for February 25, 2021.
