MINUTES
CALLED MEETING AND WORK SESSION OF THE ALLEGHANY COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD
The Alleghany County School Board held a called meeting and work session on January 8, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at the Central Office Complex in Low Moor, Virginia.
PRESENT: Gerald E. Franson; Donnie T. Kern; R. Craig Lane; Danielle I. Morgan, Jennifer S. Seckner, Vice Chairwoman; Randall S. Tucker, Chairman; and Jacob L. Wright. Also present: Eugene P. Kotulka, Superintendent; and Lorie C. Bess, Clerk.
ABSENT:
Chairman Tucker presided and called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. The call to order was followed by a moment of silence and the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.
(19-145) Consider approval of application for Health and Wellness grant
Mr. Kotulka reported Covington City Schools were applying for a three-year Health and Wellness Grant that would also service Alleghany County Public Schools. The program would focus on preventative health information.
MOTION: That the Board authorize the superintendent to send a letter of support for a Health and Wellness Grant with Covington City Schools.

(19-146) Update from Joint Services Committee
Mr. Wright reported each governing body and school board had appointed two representatives to serve on a committee to discuss joint schools. The selected members include Jacob Wright and Gerald Franson from Alleghany County Public Schools, Eddy Clemons and Tonya Jones from Covington City Schools, Matt Garten and James Griffith from the Alleghany County Board of Supervisors, and Mayor Thomas Sibold, Jr. and Allan Tucker from Covington City Council. Board members discussed funding options regarding equalization of salaries, studies, and attorney fees. Mr. Wright suggested using funds from the new Local Composite Index (LCI) for these expenses. The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) estimated an additional $772,251 in funds resulting from a new LCI.
