SUBJECT

Attendance Regulation JED-R

RATIONALE

Because the Virginia Department of Education now includes attendance and chronic absenteeism in consideration of a school’s accreditation, it is necessary to revise local practices and policy to support improving the attendance of students. This new regulation incorporating the requirement of a doctor’s excuse for absences in excess of 10 days in a school year, along with the initiation of a procedure for making up missed days and absences, will support improved attendance for students. Court Services has also worked with us on development of this regulation and is supportive of this change. One Judge is of the opinion that this will better enable the court to impose consequences for truancies that are brought before the judicial system. Requiring a doctor’s excuse for absences beyond 10 days in a school year is also a practice utilized by other divisions in Virginia.

This proposed regulation change will be brought to the board again in November to request approval. I am happy to answer any questions you may have.
