Hunter Safety Program in Alleghany County

RATIONALE

ACPS will re-establish and promote a partnership with the Alleghany Highlands Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries in order to provide Hunter Safety to the community via a Saturday program on March 21st from 8:00 to 3:00 at CMS.

ESTIMATED COSTS

$0 –instructional costs (registration, workbooks, teachers, etc) for the program will be covered by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VaGIF), other than any needed/required custodial fees which will be encumbered by the school or Office of Instruction.

LEGAL REFERENCE

Virginia Code 22.1-204.2: Hunter Safety education programs for students in grades seven through twelve. Local school boards may provide after-school hunter safety education programs for students in the school division in grades seven through twelve. Local school boards shall display information on its after-school hunter safety program in each school and distribute information to the parents of each student in the school division in grades seven through twelve. The Department of Game and Inland Fisheries shall establish a uniform curriculum for such hunter safety education programs.

Virginia Code 18.2-308.1: Possession of fire arm, stun weapon, or other weapon on school property prohibited. The provisions of this section shall not apply to (i) persons who possess such weapon or weapons as part of the school’s curriculum or activities….(iii) persons who possess such weapon or weapons as part sponsored or facilitated by either the school or any organization authorized by the school to conduct its programs either on or off school property.
