ALLEGHANY COUNTY - The Alleghany School County School Board at its May 17, 2021 School Board meeting appointed Dr. Jason B. Conaway to serve as the Director of Special Education, Lisa M. Hansford as Assistant Principal at Alleghany High School, and Charity T. Hale as Activities Director at Alleghany High School and Clifton Middle School for the 2021-2022 school year.


Dr. Conaway received his Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Fairmont State University, a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Marshall University, a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Concord University, and an Educational Specialist Degree in School Psychology from Marshall University. In 2019 he completed his Doctorate DegreeDr. Jason Conaway in Educational Leadership from Liberty University.


Currently, Dr. Conaway serves as a coordinator for the West Virginia Department of Education in the Office of Federal Programs. His duties include state-wide oversight for programs serving students with autism, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) indicators, mental health services, and behavior modification. Over his 18 years as an educator, he has taught special education, served as a middle school assistant principal, worked as a school psychologist, and was also an interim Special Education Director.


When asked about his appointment, Dr. Conaway stated, “I am honored to serve the staff, students, and parents of Alleghany County Schools. I look forward to helping the students and staff be the best that they can be and provide the best education to all students.”


Speaking on Dr. Conaway’s appointment, Superintendent Kimberly Halterman said, “Dr. Conaway brings a perspective that will help us continue to enhance opportunities for students in the Alleghany Highlands.  It was very clear that he had researched our current offerings and was knowledgeable of the overall context of education in Virginia.  We look forward to welcoming him to our team and are confident we will benefit from his energy and experience.”

Mrs. Lisa Hansford received her Bachelor’s degree from Mary Baldwin University in History after attending Dabney S. Lancaster Community College where she earned her Associate’s Degree in Administration.    In 2019 she earned her Master’s Degree in Administration andMrs. Lisa Hansford Supervision from the University of Virginia. 


Lisa began her teaching career with Bath County Public Schools teaching Language Arts and History before joining the staff of Alleghany County Public Schools in July of 2014 as a Language Arts and History Teacher at Clifton Middle School.    In July of 2019 she became the Testing Technology Resource Teacher at Clifton Middle School while also working as an Administrative Intern and Assistant Athletic Director. 


Mrs. Hansford stated, “I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the students, staff, and families of Alleghany High School.  I love supporting the teaching and learning process to ensure that students learn skills that will help them flourish as happy, successful, and responsible adults. I am anxious to join the current administrative team at AHS and begin my new role this fall.”


According to Superintendent Kimberly Halterman, “Mrs. Hansford is an enthusiastic champion of the schools of the Alleghany Highlands and is eager to serve in leadership.  Her experiences in technology, English, and other areas will be valuable assets to our administrative team.”


Mrs. Charity Hale received her Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training and Allied Health Science from Bridgewater College, a Master’s Degree in Kinesiology from James MadisonMrs. Charity Hale University and is currently enrolled at James Madison seeking her Administration and Supervision endorsement. 


Charity has worked as the Certified Athletic Trainer/Sports Medicine Teacher at Covington City Schools since July 1, 2007 and more recently served as the Athletic Director at Covington High School.   From 2005 until 2007 she worked as the Assistant Athletic Trainer at Bridgewater College.    She has also been an assistant softball coach at Bridgewater College and an assistant women’s basketball coach at Eastern Mennonite University. 


When asked her thoughts about her new appointment Mrs. Hale commented, "I am thankful and blessed to have been given this opportunity to serve as Activities Director at Alleghany High School and Clifton Middle School. I look forward to embarking on this journey, as athletics and activities are such a valuable part of the educational process for students. I am excited to begin working with the students, staff, and administration very soon."


Kimberly K. Halterman, Alleghany County Public Schools Superintendent stated that “Ms. Hale impressed our interview committee with her obvious commitment and integrity.  We are very pleased to be able to bring aboard an athletic and activities director with her level of dedication and experience.”
