Alleghany County, in the Allegheny Mountains of western Virginia, is part of a larger community commonly referred to as the Alleghany Highlands. Settled in the 1700s and surveyed by Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, the Alleghany Highlands grew into a mining and ore center and saw further commercial development with the arrival of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad in the 1800s.
In addition to Alleghany County, the Alleghany Highlands includes the city of Covington and the towns of Clifton Forge and Iron Gate, names that reflect the region's industrial background.
The region's economy has changed considerably since its early days, and the Highlands' region today serves as an important location for companies in the paper and wood products, packaging, and automotive industries. The region also is a growing tourist destination as a result of its location within the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests and its proximity to two world-famous resorts: The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, WV; and The Homestead in Hot Springs, VA.
Although rural in nature, the Alleghany Highlands' location on Interstate 64 means you're never far from larger metropolitan areas: Roanoke (60 miles), Richmond (176 miles) Washington, DC (227 miles) and Norfolk (270 miles).
